“Constellation” began with a shape-based, linear drawing etched into a copper plate. There are 36 shapes and, on the right side of the drawing, 9 numbered “check” boxes. As soon as I pulled the first test print of my etching, I knew what I wanted to do with it: make an edition of 9 and hand-color each—variations on a theme. During my 2023 residency in the high Arctic, I visited the Ny Ålesund research station at 79º N. There was a gift shop (!) and I purchased a set of 12 color pencils. They are very hard, and the colors are pure and muted. Considering the 36 shapes, 12 pencils, and the edition of nine etchings, I devised a system—a structure—for the hand-coloring. I assigned each color to three of the shapes (3 x 12 = 36). Three colors would be used for each etching; each color would be used once in the first four etchings (4 x 3 = 12). For the second four, three colors would be used again, but not in combination with a color from its first group of three. For the ninth etching, all 12 colors would appear together, filling all the shapes.
