The Arctic Circle

In October 2023 I spent two weeks at sea aboard the tall sailing ship Antigua as a participant in the Arctic Circle residency. It was the trip of a lifetime . . . glaciers, icebergs, ice ice ice, fjords, snow-covered mountains, frigid temps, long liminal twilight hours, northern lights. I collected rocks on shore, completed seven volumes of drawings in accordion-fold Japanese albums—High Arctic Journal Vols. I–VII; I took dozens of snapshots for the lens-based work that will accompany the drawings when shown in installation; painted 7 small watercolors; wrote five “erasure poems” from accounts of polar explorers; knit two scarves; and made two drawings on upcycled packaging.
